Trinity Lutheran’s new full-time Director of Music Ministry, John Burns and Sierra Lutheran High School are spearheading an August worship concert featuring nationally recognized musicians.
Burns recently returned to Trinity Lutheran after several years.
“Work has always taken me where I needed to be,” he said. “I’ve always been involved with the church through music, but I never really dreamed of it as full time work. Long story short, I retired from the corporate world and this opportunity became available and I took it.”
As the director of music ministry, some of Burns responsibilities include developing music that aligns with and enhances worship services.
Since his return in June, Burns has helped launch the Sierra Spirit service on Saturdays at the church.
“The updated service order is more upbeat with modern music, which reaches people in a different way,” said Burns. “We’ve had some good feedback from not just youth, but older and people who enjoy the traditional services have enjoyed this service as well.”
Burns also plays the organ and piano himself and plans to recruit more musicians, expand the Praise Band and bring back the handbell choir.
“It’s been fulfilling, and I am happy to be part of this community,” he said.
The August concert is a partnership with Sierra Lutheran High School and a kickoff for the 2023-2024 school year.
“Trinity does a lot of support for the high school, it’s a multiple church support school,” said Burns. “(head of the school) Patrick Maynard got ahold of me when I moved back and asked if we could recruit some students for a music program and we came up with this.”
The concert will feature nationally recognized song writer, musician and worship leader Adam Countryman and Concordia-Irvine Album vocalist Ariel McMahon.
“They’re great musicians and their spirit, passion and faith really shine through their talents,” said Burns. “It’s going to be a great concert.”
Countryman and McMahon will lead worship during all three services the weekend of Aug. 19 beginning with 4:30 p.m. Saturday then 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church located at 1480 Douglas Ave., Gardnerville.
“Trinity invites all to attend for a unique worship experience,” said Burns. “Anyone is welcome whether for the event, during our services or just to stop in, we’d love to have them.”
