Genoa, Nev. — An opening ceremony for the renovated East Fork Station No. 15 was well-attended on Wednesday morning. The station in Alpine View will be the new home of the district’s fuels team, which consists of 10 full-time and up to five seasonal firefighters.
The fire station was built for the Jacks Valley Volunteer Fire Department in 1974, according to the Douglas County Assessor’s Office and underwent significant renovation in preparation for the fuels team to move in.
After dropping down to the moderate range overnight, air quality is starting to improve at the air quality sensor in Ranchos Aspen Park at 6 a.m. Expect drift smoke from the northern California fires to continue this morning.
The 123-square-mile Smith River Complex is by far the largest and least contained of the fires. Consisting of a dozen fires set by an estimated 150 lightning strikes on Aug. 15, it’s burning east of Crescent City on the California Oregon border.
Nevada and California highway patrol troopers are beefing up their enforcement for the Labor Day weekend starting 6 p.m. Friday. Let’s all do our best to give these folks a break this weekend by slowing down and strapping in.
Windy conditions are forecast to arrive today as a cold front arrives in Western Nevada just in time for the holiday weekend. A lake wind advisory is in effect for Western Nevada, with winds of 30-45 mph predicted starting today and lasting through Friday.
Showers and thundershowers are predicted for the weekend with snow levels dropping to 9,500 feet possible. The low in Minden is forecast to drop to 44 degrees on Sunday, so not much danger of killing off the tomatoes.
Increasing cloudiness is forecast for today with a high temperature of 86 degrees. Southwest winds of 15-20 mph are expected this morning, gusting to 35 mph. There’s a fair chance of showers on Friday night and Sunday.
