Two weeks before Thanksgiving Matt Iwohn discovered he had cancer.

Iwohn had been sick with no improvements and diagnosis until bloodwork, tests and scans revealed cancer.

According to a Gofundme created by family friends Natalee Scarpulla and Katelyn Litt the official diagnosis is still being uncovered, but the family and doctors have a good idea where the cancer has formed.

“The Iwohn family needs our support, love and prayers during this unimaginable time,” said family friend Natalee Scarpulla.

Aside from the gofundme page, DC Jui-Jitsu is rolling out the mats for a fundraiser on behalf of the Iwohn family.

“We are rolling for Matt, a beloved member of our Jui-Jitsu community who needs our help,” reads the gym’s flyer for the fundraiser. “He’s been battling cancer and we’re coming together to support him and his family.”

Iwohn joined Jui-Jitsu gym on Industrial Way in Gardnerville in 2020 and has been an assistant coach for DC Jiu-Jitsu’s kid’s program ever since.

“His dedication to teaching the next generation and his active participation in competitions have made him an inspiration to us all,” reads the gym’s flyer.

When Iwohn, is not at the gym he’s either with his family, on job sites building custom homes, or coaching baseball.

“To know Matt is to love him,” said Scarpulla. “He is a true family man at heart, an incredible husband to his beautiful wife Becky and the most outgoing, supportive and absolute biggest fan of his two boys Matthew and Max.”

Iwohn and Becky also own OurStori, a permanent jewelry company in Minden.

The goal of family and friends of the Iwohn family is to provide support, hope and alleviate some of the financial strain and allow Matt and his family to focus solely on his health and recovery.

The fundraiser hosted at Jiu-Jitsu is 11:30 a.m. today with “open Mat Roll” beginning at 10 a.m. located at 1292 Industrial way. There will be a BBQ and raffle during the event. Or visit https://gofund.me/0fd61cd0 for “Matt’s Fight Against Cancer” Gofundme page.
