Genoa, Nev. — After six hours, the Vacation Home Rental Advisory Committee members made it through their initial revision of the code on Wednesday to a round of applause. Final redlines will go to the committee on Feb. 22. The code is tentatively scheduled to be heard at the March 14 Planning Commission meeting.


A vacation home rental owner had a permit revoked after they were reportedly caught bumping up the occupancy on a Friday night to get around the code. VHR Manager Ernie Strehlow said that appeal may come to the board soon.


Emergency personnel responded to a report of a structure fire at Sierra Pines in Woodfords around Wednesday afternoon with three engines and a water tender just after 4 p.m. Responders were on scene for two hours. I’m following up this morning.


Gardnerville Main Street is hosting “Discover Downtown and Mingle” 5:30-7:30 p.m. today in downtown Gardnerville. I expect they’ll gather at Gardnerville Station in the S-Curve.


The cost of dumping trash at the Carson City landfill is expected to go up 58 percent from $58 a ton to $74 a ton, though the towns of Gardnerville and Minden are proposed to go up to $66 a ton for the first year with the full rate hitting on July 1, 2024.


If taxable sales data is any indication, Black Friday wasn’t really a thing in 2022, with Douglas merchants reporting a 5.3 percent decrease in taxable sales in November, the first drop in the fiscal year. Merchants reported $83.3 million in sales down from $88 million.


Expect sunny skies and a high near 48 degrees today with the wind calm. There’s a chance we might see some rain or snow on Friday night into Saturday morning, but no accumulation is forecast.
