Dry powdery snow paved west Carson Valley roads with white on Thursday morning as more snow showers arrived ahead of a major storm expected to arrive on Friday morning.
“With a cold and unstable airmass in place, snow-pellet showers are possible nearly anywhere across the region today, but most prevalent in the Sierra and northeast California as upslope flow continues,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Dawn Johnson said on Thursday.
There is a 30 percent chance Carson Valley could see an inch or more of snow this afternoon.
Snow totals will be highly variable over short spatial areas due to the convective nature,” Johnson said. “A rumble of thunder is not out of the question either. The snow character will remain dry and powdery.”
It’s possible that there will be continuous snow showers in the Sierra tonight with steadier snowfall beginning early Friday.
“Snow moves into the eastern Sierra and far western Nevada in the pre-dawn hours Friday morning, spreading into the west-central Nevada Basin and Range by daybreak. Snow will taper north to south, ending for areas north of Highway 50 Saturday afternoon, and tapering off for southern areas overnight into early Sunday morning.”
Snowfall was reported to be light across Western Nevada with Gardnerville recording an inch and 2 inches reported in the Pine Nuts.
Heavenly Ski Base reported 10 inches from the storm.
