Genoa, Nev. — A rare two-day winter storm warning takes effect 11 a.m. today for Carson Valley and is expected to last through 4 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters say two waves of moderate to heavy snowfall are expected this afternoon and another wave on Tuesday morning.
Actual winter weather will extend Douglas County students’ winter break today. Slick conditions prompted Gov. Joe Lombardo to close state offices today, which weighed toward the district’s decision. Schools at Lake Tahoe were already going to be closed due to weather. The Legislature and UNR are also closed. I haven’t heard from the college, but I wager they’ll follow suit.
Work is still ongoing to clear a pile-up that involved up to three-dozen vehicles at Interstate 580 and Bowers Mansion. Pilot vehicles are escorting commuters through Washoe Valley. The Nevada Highway Patrol reports five traffic issues or collisions between 4:12 and 5:15 a.m. on Interstate 80 in Sparks.
Snow is flying about midway up Kingsbury Grade, according to the nvroads.com traffic camera. Kingsbury is its usual white self, but motorists seem to be navigating it, OK.
Light snow started falling in Genoa around 5:30 a.m. That’s likely to get worse as the morning progresses. Today we could see up to 3 inches of snow, mostly in the early afternoon. The big burst is forecast for Tuesday morning.
We’re within 5 degrees of the forecast high temperature 0f 34 degrees at 6 a.m. The wind is expected out of the south at 10-20 mph, gusting to 30 mph.
