Recovering from the record New Year’s Eve storm will result in schools being closed for another day, along with county offices at Lake Tahoe.

“While we made great progress again today in our snow removal efforts, there is still a lot of work to do and safety concerns to address both at our school sites and getting students to and from school safely,” Superintendent Keith Lewis said on Tuesday. “I know that whenever we decide to close our schools, it has a negative impact on many families.”

Lewis said he assessed schools across the county on Tuesday in making the decision to close for another day.

“I don’t feel it’s prudent or safe to open schools tomorrow,” he said. “We will keep our fingers crossed that tomorrow’s predicted storm will not bring a significant amount of new snow that further compounds the issues we are facing across the county.”

Lewis said one issue will be getting the buses into some neighborhoods that will require setting up alternate bus stops.

“We’ll definitely keep all of you updated with any changes that will need to be made,” he said.

The Tahoe General Services office located in Stateline will remain closed Wednesday.

All services offered at the Lake, other than DMV services, can be completed at the Historic Courthouse, 1616 8th Street in Minden.

The Town of Minden is working to clear the up to 16 inches of snow that fell in places, and alerted residents that might affect trash service.

Gardnerville has been working on getting trash collected, but it has been difficult, Town Manager Erik Nilssen said on Wednesday.

Residential pick-up was underway, but he’d yet to hear a report from the field.

He said that access to commercial bins was a problem this week.

“On Monday of the 80 total bins that are supposed to be collected only 15 were able to be serviced,” he said. “Businesses have the responsibility to provide access to the bins located within the solid waste enclosures. Even for the businesses that have cleared a path to the bin some of the bins have been frozen to the ground making their collection impossible.”

The town delayed the green waste pickup on Tuesday until regular trash days.
