The Jan. 18, 2023, R-C Morning Report

We admit that on first look, we were tricked by this photo taken by Topaz Ranch Estates resident John Flaherty. It turns out they're toy cars on his walk and the snow is actually around 4 feet on either side. It's a cool image, and the Nevadan in us can't resist joining John in having a little fun with it.

Genoa, Nev. — I wager a water flow alarm at 5:10 a.m. at Minden-Tahoe Airport had something to do with a broken pipe, seeing as the temperature was 1 degree there. We are experiencing a testing cold. If anything is going to freeze, that will happen today.

If anything, this morning’s commute is going to be slicker. There were seven collisions across Douglas County on Tuesday, most of which were at Lake Tahoe. Someone went for treatment from a 2:50 p.m. collision on the Valley side of Kingsbury.

I’ve got independent confirmation of a report that a woman was standing in the fog in the southbound lanes of Highway 395 around 9:45 a.m. By some miracle there’s no indication she was struck. There was a collision at 10:24 a.m. in the northbound lanes. I’ll follow up on that.

The fog was thick until around 1 p.m. I turned onto Muller from 395 at around noon and getting across was a gamble thanks to near zero visibility.

There’s a new planning commissioner after Douglas County commissioners selected three-year Stateline resident Paul Bruno over Jim Slade. Bruno is an attorney and arbitrator. Most recent chairwoman Maureen Casey and vice chairman Mark Neddenriep were reappointed to the board.

Commissioners managed to get through the entire list of appointments on Tuesday. Ahern Branch Manager Brian Clark and retired businessmen James Lee and Al Browne were selected among 11 candidates for the Airport Advisory Committee.

Tonight’s finale to the storm show will be anticlimactic with less than a half-inch of snow forecast starting 10 p.m. The storm will actually help warm things up a smidge.

There’s some fog down by the river, but it doesn’t seem to stretch to the middle of the Valley. Expect to see Mr. Sun today, but he won’t be doing much work with the high forecast to hit 36 degrees.
