Thirty-seven year nursing veteran Victoria Gatt was named the Carson Valley Health June 2023 DAISY nursing award winner
Gatt was nominated by a patient for the Diseases Attacking the Immune System Award.
“The reason Victoria stands out is because everything, and I mean everything, she said she was going to do or was doing, she held strong to her word,” according to the nomination. “This means everything to a patient.”
The award is presented at hospitals to nurses who have been nominated for going above and beyond for patients and their families. A caveat of the award is the winner is kept a secret until the award recognition event, so they learn about their award in front of and at the same time everyone else does.
One June 12, Gatt was one of many who gathered to hear the DAISY award announcement with the intent of congratulating one of her fellow nurses. It wasn’t until her manager led her to the front that Gatt realized she was selected as the winner.
“I didn’t expect this,” Gatt said. “I do all I can for each and every one of my patients. It is very heartwarming to receive this award and recognition for my work as a nurse. Thank you to the patient who took the time to see that and turn in a nomination for me. They saw the compassion I have for them.”
Nominations for the DAISY Award are encouraged year-round, and winners are chosen by a committee in the winter and spring.
Patients, families, and colleagues are all encouraged to nominate nurses who exemplify compassionate care beyond their call of service.
