Genoa, Nev. — An excessive heat watch arrives in Carson Valley starting 11 a.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Monday. Minden’s forecast to hit 101 Saturday and Sunday. The record for July 15 is 103 degrees set in 2005. That was a hot year with a 104-degree record for July 16 and July 17.
The little grasshoppers that were a curiosity on Martin Slough Trail have grown up to be an infestation in Chichester Estates. Apparently, conditions were just right for clearwinged grasshoppers to be fruitful and multiply.
Work is scheduled to begin today at Warrior Way on Highway 50 to install a new traffic signal. The state is also permanently removing on-highway parking between Warrior Way and the Zephyr Cove Resort entrance.
A $10.88 million bid to repave Highway 395 between First Street in Minden and Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville is scheduled to go before the Nevada Department of Transportation Board of Directors at their 9:30 a.m. meeting today. It’s on the consent agenda, so that’s a good sign.
We are right at the confluence of smoke from the 974-acre Bone Fire and the big Canadian fires. There’s a little bit of a spike in the air quality monitor at Ranchos Aspen Park, and a moderate reading up in Johnson Lane that’s right over the line at 52.
Both the Lucky and Pea Vine fires appear to be essentially down for the county. I can’t tell we were getting much smoke from either of those. The Zephyr Crew went down to help out with the Lucky Fire in the Aurora Crater just east of Bodie.
The developers of a project off Glenwood Drive in the Ranchos are back before the Water Conveyance Advisory Committee 4 p.m. today seeking to install bridges and landscaping along the Henningsen Ditch. The committee meets 4 p.m. in Room 306 of the Minden Inn. Get there early if you want a seat.
State Aviation Manager Kurt Haukohl will make a presentation on funding for hangar development at the Minden Tahoe Airport Advisory Committee 6 p.m. today at the Douglas County Courthouse. You can find out more about both these sessions at douglascountynv.gov
Enjoy the coolish weather while you can. According to the National Weather Service, it will be reasonably mild today through Thursday before the heat shoots upward on Friday. The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high around 88, with the wind out of the west at 10-15 mph.
