Inspired by Gardnerville’s Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival, Diamond Valley Elementary School’s fifth- and sixth-grade students sought to learn just how balloons fly.

Investigation of convection currents proved to be an interesting diversion that led to a challenge to create their own hot air balloons out of tissue paper.

Students spent a few weeks researching and crafting their balloons, and then invited their friends and families to the launch day, where balloons and motivation for learning were both lifted high.

The students, along with teacher Jennifer Munyan, thanked interim Principal Annie Millar, Superintendent Ken Burkhart, local balloonist Gary Petersen, and Jim Lamb from the Markleeville Fire Department for their support.
