Food Closet conducts farmer’s market today
Carson Valley Community Food Closet’s Farmer’s Market is open 2-4 p.m. today in the parking lot, 1251 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. This is a great way to pick up some fresh produce and get connected with other services offered through the food closet. Farmer’s Markets are held monthly through October and are open to anyone experiencing food insecurity. Upcoming dates ate July 12, August 16, Sept. 13, and Oct. 11.
The Food Closet hosts a Parking Lot Distribution from 8-9 a.m. June 24. This event is open to all and typically offers a number of items in bulk. Additional parking lot distribution dates are July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, and Oct. 14.
During both events, the Food Closet will have a selection of fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds available for free to the community.
Anyone looking to help support the Food Closet’s mission of achieving food security in Douglas County is invited to participate in a volunteer orientation 10:30 a.m. June 27. Many opportunities are available with flexible hours and dates. Contact Manager Desiree Witteman at 775-782-3711 for more information.
Another way to help out is by donating fresh homegrown produce to the food closet’s “Plant. Grow. Give.” program. The Food Closet gladly accepts fresh fruit and vegetable donations at their facility 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Some general cleaning of produce is appreciated.

Summer’s arrival
Welcome summer. Today marks the summer solstice, the day when the earth’s tilt toward the sun is at its maximum in the Northern Hemisphere. We will have more hours of sunlight today than any other day during the year, so spend some time outside and enjoy the seasonal shift.
