Zombies have taken over the Douglas High School Drama room and four survivors use their guide, “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse,” to outlive and outsmart the brain-eaters during the spring show, “Night of Comedy” Friday and Saturday.
The 1-Act comedy directed by Douglas High School senior Freddy Baker and junior Peter Sheikman and written by playwriter Don Zolidis ,” is a hand book in fighting off the undead. Will kung-fu work? Perhaps flirting with the zombies or convincing them to use their brains instead of eating them will. The survivors attempt the tactics, including sacrificing the weak.
“I view it as a bad safety video of what could happen or go very wrong if this scenario was to occur,” said Baker.
This is Baker’s third directing role, including a similar 1-Act, “Everyone Gets Eaten by Sharks.”
“I clearly have a type,” she said. “This is another comedy 1-Act where characters break the fourth wall in multiple scenes.”
The zombies, portrayed by freshman Mary Coursey and junior Abby Olsen are slow and clumsy.
“Ironically, I have an intense fear of zombies,” said Baker. “So, I wanted something I’d be comfortable with.”
Baker described them like the zombies in Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
“They’re kind of more in tune then they appear to be and not all that scary,” she said.
One of the survivors portrayed by freshman Mackenzie Evans said the play has a lot to it, but it’s meant to be funny.
“It’s chaos, but fun chaos,” she said.
“10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse,” opens the Night of Comedy 7 p.m. Friday at Douglas High School in the drama room, 101.
Along with the 1-Act, the advance drama class and impromptu team will perform other comedy sketches.
“It’s a night of comedy and good fun,” said Baker.
The fun will continue 7 p.m. Saturday with a matinee at 2 p.m. Cost, $10 at the door, $5 presale and $5 matinee. For more information and tickets email Amy Sando at asando@dcsd.k12.nv.us or call Douglas High School at 775-782-5136.
