Genoa, Nev. — Monitor Pass opened on Friday afternoon as the California Department of Transportation keeps plugging away at reopening Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes. I wouldn’t expect to get into Yosemite through the Tioga Gate before Memorial Day, and maybe even Flag Day.
Sunday’s Mother’s Day thunderstorm zig-zagged across the Valley, with big dumps in Minden and Gardnerville before it bounced off the Pine Nuts and dropped .4 inches of rain north of Genoa.
A practice water drop from a helicopter prompted a note from an Autumn Hills resident around lunchtime on Friday. After the April 30 fire in that area, the concern is understandable.
Backyard burning is officially over for the season, but agricultural and government operations will continue to burn. I expect the Zephyr Crew will be back at work on the East Shore today.

We’re entering the second week of the Carson Water Subconservancy’s peak flow contest and it looks like last week’s four entries are out of the running. This week’s entries look like they might stand a chance.
The West Fork of the Carson River at Woodfords continues to bounce around in the action stage between 12.5 and 13.5 feet. It barely exceeded the minor flood stage just after midnight on Sunday. The East Fork is down below the 13-foot action stage.
It’s going to warm up fast today with the high forecast to hit 79 degrees with the wind picking up out of the southwest at 10-15 mph gusting to 25 mph.
