A Carson City woman was sentenced to 50 months in prison in connection with a Jan. 2, 2022, stabbing.

Kassidy Robin Martin, 26, was remanded into custody to begin serving her term for battery with a deadly weapon with substantial bodily harm on Tuesday.

In addition to serving 19-50 months in state prison, Martin was ordered to pay $5,128 in restitution to the victim, who had to undergo surgery after being helicoptered from the Indian Hills apartment complex where he was stabbed.

“This was a wakeup call for me,” Martin told District Judge Tod Young during her sentencing. “I had no idea where I was mentally. This opened my eyes and I asked, ‘What am I doing with my life?’”

Attorney Nadine Morton sought probation for Martin.

“Under no circumstances is it appropriate to stab someone,” Morton said. “The victim put himself in a bad situation by having a minor in the car. He was really drunk and when the minor got out of the car she didn’t have her underwear.”

Morton said Martin was trying to be the hero in the situation and overreacted.

Then 20 years old, the stabbing victim parked at the Indian Hills apartment complex after drinking with three teenage girls that night. The father of one of the girls punched him in the nose. After that, Martin, who was dating the man, went into the apartment, got a knife and stabbed the driver in the gut, nicking his intestines.

Prosecutor Nathaniel Smith showed video and photos related to the crime.

He pointed out that Martin has eight arrests and five convictions in the last 28 months and that she failed to comply every time.

“She is not a good candidate for probation,” he said. “She said she acted in rage and impulse. She thought she was judge, jury and executioner.”

Martin is denying an April 19 drug felony in Carson City, saying she was handed the drugs by someone who was being arrested.

“You don’t care about other people,” Young said. “You have violated every probation you’ve ever had.”

Martin was given credit for 26 days time served.

• A June12-16 trial has been vacated in the case of a Carson City man accused of attempted murder in a Oct. 12, 2022, stabbing in Indian Hills.

Efrain Gonzales-Magana, 29, was arrested at the scene.

He appeared in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday where attorney Brian Filter sought to have a mental health evaluation done.

Filter said he’d suspected for a while that Gonzales-Magana might have some issues before the issue crystalized.

Filter and prosecutor Jim Sibley will pick two mental health professionals to conduct an evaluation, but that’s going to take longer than a month.

District Judge Tod Young said that as soon as the evaluation is complete, he would get a trial scheduled as soon as possible should Gonzales-Magana be determined competent to aid in his defense.
