Genoa, Nev. — Volunteers will be placing flags on veterans’ graves in Eastside Memorial Park this morning in observance of Memorial Day. Chapter 7 of the Disabled American Veterans in Carson City will host the placing of the flags at veterans graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery 4 p.m. today.


Today is National Poppy Day and members of the American Legion Auxiliary members will be distributing poppies to raise funds to support veterans, active-duty service members and their families. Auxiliary members will be out in front of stores with their poppies.


On Saturday, Reach for Joy hosts their 3rd annual Veterans Appreciation BBQ lunch 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at High Sierra Fellowship in Gardnerville.


Highway 88 from Pickett’s Junction to Crystal Springs East is expected to reopen both lanes 8 p.m. today in time for the Memorial Day weekend. The other single lane closure from Martin’s Meadow to Carson Spur reopened 6 p.m. Thursday, according to CalTrans spokesman Bob Highfill.


Holiday travelers on Highway 395 will find that the one-lane closure at High Point Curve above Topaz Lake remains in place with a traffic signal. The side of the road is cracked and sagging, prompting concerns.


Bishop’s Mule Days celebration will close Highway 395 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. People will be able to get around it pretty easily, but if you’re in Bishop, maybe stop and enjoy the parade instead.


It’s almost always somewhat rainy for the first Bently Nevada Family Summer concert in Minden Park and today will likely be no exception. The Outlaw Mariachis are performing 6 p.m., co-sponsored by Carson Valley Health and featuring food from Hungry Hearts and Lady Griller.


I haven’t received any report of damage from a lightning strike on Genoa Highlands 3:30 p.m. Thursday that rattled windows in the neighborhood. An accompanying downpour left about a tenth of an inch of rain in 10 minutes I’m told.


More showers and thunderstorms are forecast for today, but they’ll move a little faster. They increase in probability 2-5 p.m. and then start to disperse toward 8 p.m. The high temperatures is predicted to be 71 degrees under partly sunny skies with the wind out of the northwest at 5-10 mph.
