Genoa, Nev. — Today marks the 248th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, which is only a couple of weeks younger than the U.S. Navy, whose birthday is Oct. 13. Local, state and federal offices are closed today in observation of Veteran’s Day, which is on Saturday.
Bluegrass band The Bow Ties are performing 7 p.m. today in the CVIC Hall in beautiful downtown Minden. Doors open at 6. The box office is closed today, but you might be able to score one of the $28 tickets at the door if you’re lucky. Visit www.cvartscouncil.com for more information.
If the concert is sold out, you could visit the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club’s annual Holiday Craft Fair which is open 5-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center.
Both Virginia City and Reno are conducting Veterans Day parades on Saturday morning. Reno’s starts at 11:11 a.m. while veterans will be marching down C Street in the Queen of the Comstock starting at 11.
When World War I ended on Nov. 11, 1918, residents rang every bell they could find, including the one in front of the newly constructed Douglas County High School in Gardnerville. At 11 a.m. Saturday, 105 years later, the school bell and others will ring in honor of Armistice Day, the precursor to Veterans Day.
Welcome All Veterans Everywhere is offering a free breakfast for veterans 8-11 a.m. at Fuentes Cantina in Minden. Veterans will have to show ID, according to organizer Carl Schnock.
It’s another red, white and blue sky morning in Carson Valley but it will be the beginning of next week before any weather sets in. Today expect mostly cloudy skies clearing gradually with an afternoon high near 59 degrees and the wind out of the northwest at 5 mph.
