At least 80 red shirts filed from Carson Valley Middle School down highway 395 chanting “we deserve a better board.”
The rally consisted of parents, students, teachers, grandparents and community members part of the “We Deserve A Better Board” group.
The group has more than 700 members, according to member Marty Swisher.
“We’re taking a stand for kids, staff, teachers and parents,” said Swisher during the march on Monday. “The more support we get the more we can do.”
We Deserve A Better Board was created to voice public concerns about the Douglas County School Board, specifically the four-member majority who have been subject of public protest since the beginning of the year.
During Tuesday’s meeting Douglas High School senior Faith Strabala-Karosich spoke during public comment about the efforts of the We Deserve A Better Board group.
“I understand that previous statements have said that those in red shirts are a small and loud minority and if we wanted to change anything, we should all run for the board and although that is great in theory, it is simply not possible,” she said. “Those in red shirts are representing students such as myself, teachers past and current. Teachers who are intelligent and wonderful Teachers who show up on a daily basis. I am a product of those teachers. I am a 2024 senior, cheer captain, prom captain, previous junior class president, NHS member, Block D member and I have been actively serving in the community since I can remember, all in addition to currently taking six advanced placement classes. Those in red shirts are not only representing me but those in the community such as my parents, who are both working in the schools. They get to see the positive influence those in red shirts have and all that they represent. Thank you to those in red shirts who represent students like me.”
Swisher said the group is looking for candidates to run in the next election in 2024 and more members to join the group.
