Dresslerville Red Bear Youth Council is hosting a craft fair and Indian taco sale 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Dresslerville Community Center, 828 Mehu St. in Dresslerville.
Items on sale included beaded items (hats, keychains, pens, earrings, and other jewelry); hand sewn items (aprons, pillows, ribbon shirts/skirts, towel sets, and others); T-shirts; Bags; purses; embroidered hats and beanies; crocheted stuffed animals; coffee mugs; tumblers; jerseys and Nike gear; native designed-blankets, shorts, jackets, and backpacks; beading supplies; homemade salsa, pies and baked goods; car air fresheners; personalized pens; Croc charms; and flavored lemonade.
The council was established by Dresslerville Community Council Chairman Patrick Burtt, who also serves as vice-chairman of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, along with Washoe Tribe Truancy Prevention Officer Tony Kizer and Volunteer and Primary Advisor Kristin Perkins.
The youth council’s officers include Chairwoman Jordyn Wyatt, Vice Chairman Ethan Wyatt and Secretary Jessica Hall who worked together to develop rules and guidelines set forth within the group’s by-laws.
The council’s objectives are to provide an opportunity for representation of the tribal youth; work toward positive goals; promote the development of future tribal leaders; help solve the problems facing Native youth; coordinate community service projects; provide opportunities for the youth to interact for fun and fellowship; promote academic success and cultural enrichment. The group consists of Native American youth ages 9- 20 years. Recruitment is ongoing, and all interested youth are given the opportunity to participate, including off-reservation youth residing in the area.
The council has participated in a ribbon skirt making class at the University of Nevada, Reno; Attended Nevada State Legislature session in support of Senate Bill 391 and attended Dresslerville Community Council meetings.
The youth council volunteered at the annual WaSheShuItDeh Festival Elder’s Dinner at Meek’s Bay Resort.
