Genoa, Nev. — Saturday’s biggest celestial event is the ring of fire eclipse that will occur 8-11 a.m. with about 85 percent of the sun obscured by 9:21 a.m., which is around when the sky will be cloudiest. Pro tip: Clouds won’t cut it. Don’t look at the sun without some welder goggle level protection.

Engineering students from the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will put the rivalry aside on Saturday to launch a balloon carrying a 12-pound payload and live streaming cameras 100,000 feet above Winnemucca.

A flu vaccine clinic is noon to 6 p.m. today at Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville for Alpine County residents. Douglas County Community Health is hosting flu clinics 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Topaz Ranch Estates Community Center and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Indian Hills Community Center in James Lee Park.

The Tigers host Wooster at tonight's Homecoming Game in Minden. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Homecoming royalty will be announced at half-time. The dance is Saturday so expect to see students in their finery at the Valley's more photogenic locations.

Two Oktoberfests this weekend have strayed into actual October in Genoa and Gardnerville. The Genoa event is Saturday afternoon in the town park and Sertoma’s Oktoberfest is Sunday at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

At least one of my tomato plants succumbed to Wednesday morning’s cold snap, with the one right next to it doing fine. It’s around 36 degrees before daybreak in Genoa. The low in the Valley is 27 degrees at Minden-Tahoe Airport.

The forecast for today is mostly cloudy this Friday the 13th morning clearing around lunchtime with the clouds returning this afternoon. That’ll keep temperatures mild overnight for the next few days. Today’s high temperature is expected to hit 72 degrees. We could see 80 degrees on Monday.
