Genoa, Nev. — A trash can caught fire inside a home on Kathy Way in the Gardnerville Ranchos at 3:25 a.m. today. The fire filled the house with smoke, but East Fork firefighters got it out and ventilated the place.

East Fork firefighters responded to a controlled burn in Ruhenstroth this morning that they found was within regulations. The first week of burning resulted in several calls, most of which were fine.

The collision south of Gardnerville on Thursday morning splintered the base of the power pole, knocking out power for about 5 hours. NV Energy said it was back on by around 9:20 a.m. after the pole was replaced.

Today is the observed Nevada Day holiday in preparation for Saturday’s 10 a.m. parade in Carson City. Local and state offices are closed for the day.

It’s a frosty morning out with the low at Minden-Tahoe Airport hitting 16 degrees. That’s going to be more the rule than the exception over the weekend with even frostier conditions in the forecast.

Down in Fredericksburg, resident Jeff Garvin reported 21 degrees, while it’s around 28 degrees in Genoa up on the bench. It’s a little bit foggy out this morning, but nothing very thick.

The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 60 degrees with the wind out of the west 5-10 mph, gusting to 20 mph. The fridge door is open on Sunday morning with a low of 14 degrees.
