The Oct. 30, 2023, R-C Morning Report

The balloons didn't get off the ground at the Nevada Day Parade, but here's one drifting over Gardnerville on Oct. 23. There was another up on Monday.

Genoa, Nev. — Recordcourier.com decided to extend its Nevada Day holiday starting around 5 a.m. today but is back online as of 8. As a result, the Morning Report was also a tad late.

Frigid temperatures will test whether water systems are ready for winter. On Sunday morning, Gardnerville’s Dottie’s Casino reported a broken fire sprinkler line. I expect we’ll hear more of that today.

The low temperature at Minden-Tahoe Airport dropped to 7 degrees at 6 a.m. and could go a smidge lower. Sunday’s low at the airport was 9 degrees. Most of the lower portions of the Valley are in the teens, with lower 20s along the base of the Sierra.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake near Coleville kicked off a dozen aftershocks on Friday night. The 10:40 p.m. temblor was followed by 2.58 and 3.33 quakes within the next 10 minutes, according to the Seismology Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

East Fork responded to Indian Hills for a couch on fire just after 5 p.m. Sunday that sent smoke through the house. Residents got some water on it, and it didn’t spread to the rest of the home, fortunately.

I started my first fire of the season this morning, mainly to see if I could get it rolling. I expect we’ll hear some woodstove and fireplace related calls as people re-learn how to burn. Pro-tip: Make sure you have a good fireproof bin for ashes and please don’t dump them in the garbage.

The official low for Sunday morning was 15 degrees in Minden, well above the 6-degree record set in 1971. That was a frosty year with a 3-degree record for Oct. 30.

Today expect sunny skies with a high around 57 degrees and the wind out of the north at 5-10 mph. The low on Halloween morning is expected to be 19. It will warm up to 64 degrees on Tuesday, so not everyone has to dress as Arctic explorers for Halloween.
