Genoa, Nev. — Nevada children will celebrate the state’s actual 159th birthday today by extorting neighbors for candy, which is my little way of saying happy Halloween.


Trick or Treat Safety Street is 3-8 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The cost is $5 per child and there are prizes for best costume. Fright at the Fairgrounds’ big finale is 8:30 p.m.


Gardnerville churches are Trunk or Treat central today including all three along Centerville Lane 5-7:30 p.m. and Trinity Lutheran Church 5:30-7 p.m.


Donna Iverson of the Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail Association will be speaking noon today at the Good Governance Group at the COD Casino in Minden.


With the first real cold snaps of the year, people are finding out the hard way their furnaces require some help. East Fork responded 6:30 a.m. Monday to an address on Toiyabe in Gardnerville when residents turned on the heater and the house filled with smoke.


Prescribed burning is continuing on federal lands, with the occasional wildfire report called in by a passer-by up at Lake Tahoe on Monday.


We’ll be wrapping up the first month of the 23-24 water year with a fifth of an inch of precipitation in October. With no rain in the forecast until the end of the week, that’s going to be it for this month.


Expect partly sunny skies with a high temperature of 64 degrees and calm conditions. The low tonight is forecast to drop to 30 degrees.
