Tiger girls track and field win Big George

Douglas High School girls track and field stacked up another impressive performance last weekend, this time on its own track.

The Tigers won the meet with a score of 149.5, besting second place Spanish Spring (104) by a healthy margin.

Leading the way in the sprints was Grace Strabala, who won the 100 (12.83) and 200 (26.49). Senior Bliss Moody was third in the 100 and second in the 200.

In the 3,200 meters, sophomore Lucy Nord finished in third place in 12:20.27, setting a personal record.

Katelyn Coons, Autumn Petite and Ava Coons took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Katelyn Coons went on to take third in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.17.

The Tiger girls dominated the relay section of the meet, winning the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x800.

In the shot put, Harley Smith took sixth with a throw of 29 feet, one inch.

Elizabeth Gneiting finished third in the high jump with a mark of five feet.

Moody, Gneiting and Logan Karwoski took first, second and third in the long jump with Moody winning in a season-record leap of 16-10.25.

Gneiting took second in the triple jump with 35-3.75.

On the boys side, Douglas was third with 75.5 team points.

Galena won the boys meet with 99.5 team points.

Mateo Esquivel was fifth in the 200-meter dash for the Tigers in a personal record time of 23.92.

Junior CJ Bera finished in third in the 400 in 53.06, setting a personal record.

In the 800, junior Luke Davis took fourth with a time of 2:04.75 before taking third in the 1,600 in 4:34.74.

Senior Dylan Spear-Holub was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.03.

The Tigers’ 4x100 relay won the event while Douglas’ 4x200 was third.

The 4x400 team of Zak Weddell, Joel Nord, Zach Jackson and Lukas Neely won in 3:33.95.

Connor Jackson and Josh Nelson went 1-2 in the long jump with distances of 19-11.5 and 19-8, respectively.

Douglas softball goes 4-1 over weekend

The Douglas High softball team was nearly flawless through its first four games of its tournament this weekend, going 4-0 and allowing two total runs.

The Tigers’ only loss came at the hands of James Logan (11-1), by a 3-0 final.

Douglas opened the tournament with an 11-0 win over Alhambra, courtesy of a balanced offense where every Tiger player except one that came to the plate recorded a hit.

Talia Tretton was perfect in the circle with nine strikeouts in three innings.

In a 3-1 win over Bishop Manogue, Annie Hill drove in all three runs for Douglas with a home run to center in the third inning.

Marissa McLelland was 3-for-3 in the win as well.

In a 10-0 win over North Valleys in six innings, Lilyann Lee drove in three runs, going 2-for-4 with a home run.

Mercedes Covey was also credited with a pair of RBIs.

Tretton fanned nine hitters in six innings.

The Tigers’ fourth win of the tournament came in a 12-1 beat down of Heritage.

Hill, Lee and Zora Simpson all had three RBIs in the win.

The Tigers could only muster three hits in their loss to James Logan, which scored all three of its runs in the third inning.

UP NEXT: Douglas (14-4) went on the road Tuesday to take on Damonte Ranch (4-5-1).

Douglas baseball drops third straight contest

It’s been a tough opening to league play for Douglas High baseball after falling to McQueen, 9-7, Saturday.

It marks the third loss in a row for the Tigers after losses in back-to-back games against Bishop Manogue.

Saturday, Thomas Young was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a triple and two RBIs.

Duncan DeLange drove in two runs for Douglas while Aaron Tekansik and Jeffrey Peters were each credited with an RBI.
