Genoa, Nev. — East Fork Fire Protection District trustees laid out a plan on Friday to hire the first new fire chief since the turn of the century. With 24 years, East Fork Fire Chief Tod Carlini is the longest serving fire chief in East Fork’s history.

District trustees have asked Carlini for a letter detailing his plans for his final months to be presented at their Aug. 20 meeting. Trustees Bernie Curtis and Jacques Etchegoyhen both participated in Carlini’s original hiring as county commissioners.

Questions about Drayton also prompted some about the county’s transportation master plan, which was last updated in 2017. The county updated its travel demand model and will be looking at intersections and roads to determine future levels of service.

Two collisions on opposite ends of the Valley resulted in one person being transported for treatment. A vehicle rollover was reported at Centerville and Edna and another at Highway 395 and Mica both occurred at around 7 a.m.

During Friday’s thunderstorm, deputies were reportedly finding dead and near dead pigs lying along Highway 395 through Indian Hills, I overheard on the scanner. I have no idea what happened or why, and any explanation might just ruin the story.

The weekend saw the first recorded rain at the official gauge in Minden since May 14. It was .02 inches, so barely enough to dampen the dust, but it was nice. Friday night’s down draft claimed one of the tents for the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center’s Heritage Day, along with trees along 10th Street in Minden.

We had a warmest night since 1906 on Saturday with a low of 61 degrees. The Desert Research Institute gauge south of Genoa Lane dead center between Foothill and Highway 395 recorded a half inch of rain on Saturday afternoon. Next highest in the county was the NV Energy gauge on Wild Oat Mountain, which recorded .31 inches.

Blue skies and temperatures in the mid-90s will be the rule through at least next weekend. Today it’s expected to warm up to near 95 degrees with the wind out of the west at 5-15 mph.
