Genoa, Nev. — A red flag warning has been issued for very nearly all of northwestern Nevada, including Carson Valley as a cold front brings gusty winds and low humidity to the Sierra Front. A lake wind advisory is in effect for Tahoe.


There’s only 40 miles between Gardnerville and Reno but the air quality difference is significant this morning. The Ranchos Aspen Park monitor is reading 8 or good, while Reno is reading 101 or unhealthy for sensitive groups.


The northbound lanes of Highway 395 were shut down around just before 6 a.m. after a vehicle hit a cow near Genoa Lane. No human injuries were reported as a result.


We’re a week out from the start of school and Highway 395 looks like it’s getting very close to opening. I’ve already pretty much bet the farm that will happen sometime this week, but we’ll see how much of a longshot that was.


About 500 people turned out for the Carson Valley Swim Center’s 35th anniversary open house on Saturday. The center was brand spanking new when I first set foot in The R-C on Aug. 14, 1989.


Gardnerville Town Administrative Services Manager Carol Louthan was recognized last week for 30 years of service. Town Manager Erick Nilssen said he was in high school when she started working part-time.


Saratoga Springs residents Bill and Cindy Bourne got up at 4 a.m. today and spotted at least 50 shooting stars from the Perseids and a half-dozen satellites. Bill said Mars and Jupiter are approaching conjunction.


Attorney Rich McGuffin said he went out to look at the meteor shower while and was treated to the aurora. The Space Weather Prediction Center at www.swpc.noaa.gov reports there’s a strong geomagnetic storm today, but just grazing our corner of Nevada.


Today will be a blustery, but hardly a shingle-ripper with the southwest wind 15-20 mph, gusting to 30 mph, according to the forecast. We could see sunny skies and a high near 88 degrees.
