Genoa, Nev. — There were far more cones than cars before dawn today as lane restrictions continue on Highway 395 for the finishing touches to the road. On Thursday, the state said the highway was substantially complete and offered free ice cream from DST Coffee or Sierra Sprinkle during the Wine Walk.

When work first started on Main Street in June, I was in court when prosecutor Jim Sibley asked, “Shouldn’t you be downtown counting cones?” I took that to heart over the last few months. The repaving of Highway 395 has been easily the biggest story in the towns.

A petition challenging the county’s ban on vacation home rentals north of Cave Rock was denied late Wednesday. I have the ruling from District Judge Tod Young and I’m working on that today.

East Fork firefighters came to the rescue of a mountain biker who crashed about three miles into the Clear Creek Trail around 7:50 p.m. Thursday.

Barbie’ is showing 8:30 p.m. today in Heritage Park in Gardnerville. On Saturday, Donna Inversin will speak 10 a.m. about "The Historic Virginia and Truckee Trail: From Old Railroad to Future Rail Trail” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden.

The Sheridan Acres Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual barbecue and concert at the fire station. I don’t know if they’re still selling tickets, but you can email at sheridanvfd8@gmail.com or leave a message at 775- 265-4590 to find out.

The fire weather watch us still up for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday covering most of the Sierra Front. Don’t be surprised if that turns into a red flag warning this afternoon or Saturday morning. Either way, it's probably a good idea to be careful with sparks anytime.

Today we’re looking at sunny skies and a forecast high of 88 degrees. The wind will be out of the west 10-15 mph, gusting to 25 mph this afternoon.
