A Chautauqua of Sir Ernest Shackleton, a concert by Moxy Ruckus and a presentation on escapes from the Historic Nevada State Prison are featured as part of the Dangberg Summer Festival in late August.

The celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Chautauqua at Dangberg Historic Park continues by celebrating Wednesday night Chautauquas with the theme: “Follow Us on an Adventure!” All Wednesday evening Chautauquans have an adventurous tale to share with their audience.

Doug Mishler will portray Sir Ernest Shackleton, legendary explorer who led a daring expedition to the Antarctic continent, in 1914, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Between 1901 and 1921, Shackleton led three expeditions to Antarctica and participated in another.

In the last 31 years, Mishler has made more than 800 presentations of more than 30 historical figures including Henry Ford, Jackson Pollock, and recently added Chuck Yeager, Gene Roddenberry, and Earl Warren. He is the founder and Managing Artistic Director of Restless Artists’ Theatre in Reno and has taught American Cultural History for more than 23 years.

Wednesday evening Chautauqua ticket prices are $15 for 17 years and older. Youth 16 years and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the event. The gate opens at 5:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Moxy Ruckus, featuring Monique Haviland, will perform a Big Hair Eighties Review concert 6:30-8 p.m.

Thursday evening concert ticket prices are $20 for 17 years and older. Youth 16 years and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the event. The gate opens at 5:30 p.m.

Nevada State Historic Prison Preservation Society’s Glen Whorton will speak 10-11 a.m. Aug. 24 on “The Great and Not So Great Escapes.”

Nevada State Prison has had its share of escapes in its one hundred and 50-year history.

Whorton will cover the great escape of 1871; the longest escape and recapture in the history of the United States. Interspersed will be tales of inmate characters, staff heroes and bunglers, often considered Nevada history in its most troubling form.

Whorton began his career as an Officer Trainee in the Department of Prisons and retired after 32 years of service. Whorton’s last position was Director of the Department. He has additional experience as an Army Aviator, Community College Instructor, Ombudsman for the Nevada Attorney General, and Hearing Representative for the Nevada Parole Board.

This event is free for all to attend.

“We’ve had such an exciting festival season and I can hardly believe it is winding down,” said Park Events Manager Kim Harris.

Please bring seating and only certified service animals are allowed. Guests may bring a picnic as no food or beverages will be sold at these events. All events are held outdoors.
