What is it called when an eagle, an elephant, a flamingo, a rooster, a pig and a banana get together? The first day of school at Jacks Valley Elementary School.

School started Monday for Jacks Valley and the rest of the Douglas County School District.

Teachers and staff at Jacks Valley dressed up as the animals and fruit to greet students.

“We do it every year,” said EPIC Instructional Coach Cris Jezek. “You have to be willing to be a little silly. Everyone loves it.”

Fine Arts teacher Liz Hastings said parents and students seemed excited for a new school year.

“The excitement is in the air, we are ready,” said Hastings. “Everyone had great things to say about their summer and everyone is ready to start the year.”

With school back in session the Douglas County Sherriff’s Office reminded residents to be patient and mindful of students, crossing guards and parents dropping off their children within school zones.

Nevada law prohibits motorists from driving faster than 15 mph in posted school zones. School zones are located adjacent to schools. School zone flashers or flashing yellow lights accompanied by the school zone speed limit indicate when the school zone is active.

Drivers are not allowed to make a U-turn or pass other vehicles in active school zones or school crossing zones. Crossing guards will be in the areas situated near elementary schools to provide additional traffic safety for the younger students crossing in the marked crosswalks.

When a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing it means children are climbing aboard or off of the bus and it is prohibited to pass a bus during this time.

Law enforcement personnel will continue to enforce traffic safety laws year-round as part of their commitment to reduce accidents and save lives. Whether a driver, a passenger, or student, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to make safety on roadways their top priority.

A back to school and end of summer bash will be hosted by CV Flyte at Minden Park 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Attendees can enjoy live music by Moxy Ruckus, vendors, food trucks, bounce houses, face painting and more.
