Genoa, Nev. — If you’re wondering why there are huge stacks of water bottles stocked in stores, it’s for the burners heading to their eponymous event in the Black Rock Desert. Sounds like they didn’t quite sell the entire 70,000 spots.


Discovery Day at the Airport was fairly well attended from what I could see on Saturday morning. I hesitate to mention this, but firefighters confirmed that it’s been a quiet wildfire season, so far. I’m knocking on wood as I type this.


I have a tour scheduled with a Nevada Department of Transportation engineer on the newly finished Highway 395 project. That will wrap up the story from the construction perspective.


We’re essentially putting together three editions this week due to the Labor Day holiday. Letters and submissions for the Sept. 4 edition need to be in by early Thursday.


While we mostly got some light sprinkles on Saturday, further south the National Weather Service is reporting a half inch in Coleville, Sonora and Monitor passes. There were reports of light snow at Truckee, but that seems to have dodged Jobs and the other peaks of the Sierra range.


My tomatoes appear to have survived Sunday morning’s cold temperatures. New records for coldest high temperature were set over the weekend at 72 and 65 degrees in Minden. There were many places that recorded colder lows than the county seat, but the official records held.


It warmed up fast on Sunday and the mercury is expected to keep climbing this week, with sunny skies and a high near 83 degrees today and low overnight at 48 degrees.
