Spring Creek visits Douglas football Friday

Douglas High School football will host for the first time this season when Spring Creek visits Minden on Friday.

The Tigers – looking to rebound from Friday’s 18-16 loss at Elko – also will introduce the next Hall of Fame class.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

As is tradition, Douglas High football will induct its next Hall of Fame class prior to the home opener.

“I think it’s a good experience for our kids to see that and some of the traditions that we have as a program,” said Douglas head coach Kyle Mays.

There will be five names added to the Hall of Fame wall: Adam and Zach Johnson (Class of 2003); Andrew Jensen (Class of 2015); Luis Verdeja (1992); and Craig Bell (2003).

TIGERS ANXIOUS TO PLAY AT HOME

Spring Creek features a big man on the line that is already gathering interest from Nevada and other Division I programs in senior Colin Banning (No. 71).

The Spartans fell to Carson last week, 34-15, but were able to move the football at times, putting up 277 yards of offense.

Spring Creek used two quarterbacks against the Senators and a handful of running backs, but relied on sophomores McCoy McArtor (No. 22) and Landon Boyle (No. 24) for most of their carries. McArtor also tossed 13 passes at quarterback.

Aiden Walthers (No. 1) is another name that the Tigers are prepared for in the Spartan secondary.

Outside of a handful of Spring Creek players, Mays said Douglas’ focus will turn inward.

The Tigers will look to find a steady presence on offense, looking to eclipse the 20-point threshold for the first time this fall.

Douglas’ Camran Peake, a junior, received plenty of praise for his role in Friday’s contest after being shifted from offensive line to fullback in a pinch.

“We had to put him at fullback Wednesday and he’s normally a guard,” said Mays. “He went out there and performed extremely well considering two days at the position. He did really, really well for us Friday night.”
