Genoa, Nev. — AAA is predicting a 9 percent increase in domestic travel over this Labor Day weekend, which will likely translate into a lot of folks on highways 395, 88 and 50 over the weekend who aren’t particularly familiar with our corner of Nevada.

Gardnerville Ranchos residents should anticipate travelers cutting along the “shortcut” between 395 and 88 formed by Riverview, Dresslerville and Centerville listed in map-plications. It just sounds like a good way to get lost to me.

Highway 395 might see a sudden reduction in regional traffic when the California Department of Transportation shuts it down starting Wednesday to install two animal crossings near Sonora Junction.

A kitchen fire on Cahi Circle in the Gardnerville Ranchos and an almost simultaneous Sheriff’s call about someone stalking school children getting off a bus prompted a lot of sirens in the area around 3 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters quickly cleared the first call, and law enforcement will follow up on the latter.

Soul and Motown singer Nathan Owens performs 6 p.m. today in Minden Park for the Starbucks Carson Valley Roasting Plant and Distribution Center Summer Concert Series. The last of the Last Fridays Wine Walks in Genoa is 5-8 p.m. today.

Alpine author Karen Dustman will speak 10 a.m. Saturday at Dangberg Historic Park on her third book in a series of stories of Carson Valley and its history. Visit Dangberg.org for information.

One thing that's not happening on Saturday is The Center for Hope and Healing's Brats, Bands and Brews. The calendar item appearing in Saturday's R-C is an artifact from two years back.

Today is the deadline to RSVP to attend Wednesday’s Douglas County Republican Women luncheon where representatives from the Trump, Amodei, Brown and Gray campaigns will discuss their platforms. Email DCRWrsvp@gmail.com or call 415-985-5432 for more information.

There might be some afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains over the weekend, but that possibility seems pretty remote. Otherwise, the forecast calls for sunny skies and highs in the low 90s until Monday, which it cools off a bit.
