About 100 people turned out Wednesday for the inaugural Hot August Bites celebrating The Grill Next Door’s first anniversary at the Meadowdale Center in Gardnerville.

The event featured a 10 “heat” spicy eating competition where 11 participants ate chicken wings, peanuts, popcorn and peppers of increasing intensity prepared by co-owner Dan Fredrickson.

After 10 rounds the tie break between contestants Randy Tholl and Jordan Brooks was whole habaneros.

Tholl threw in the towel on pepper No. 6 and Brooks was declared the winner, according to Grill Next Door Co-Owner Jenn Frederickson.

The event was a fundraiser for eight nonprofits, with Brooks choosing Meneley Elementary School.

The event also featured Big Mama’s Car Show & Ping Pow Pom and live music Miki Rae and the Hooligans.
