A run of hot topics

Action related to agreements on two controversial topics before the county commissioners are likely to be joined by a third and perhaps a fourth depending on what happens Thursday.

Commissioners are scheduled to conduct a public hearing on an ordinance approving an 84-unit subdivision on the northeastern flank of the Gardnerville Ranchos. The board already approved the settlement 5-0 on Nov. 7 and introduced the required ordinance.

The approval is the result of legal action filed by the developer after commissioners previously denied the project back in March. Should the commission not approve the second reading of the ordinance, the case goes back to court.

The county commission is also scheduled to introduce an ordinance that would prohibit truck traffic on parts of Wildhorse, Vicky and Clapham lanes; Kayne, Gordon, and Fuller avenues and East Valley Road.

That action is being taken in the wake of commissioners’ agreement with Knox Excavation clearing the way for the company to use Johnson Lane to transport materials from the Painted Rock Mine.

Commissioners are also scheduled to hear appeals of the planning commissioners’ action on two proposed 5G towers. Residents are appealing the approval of a tower along Stephanie Way and Verizon is appealing the denial of a tower at Station 14 off County Road in Minden. Regardless of what commissioners do, it’s entirely possible one or both those will end up in federal court.

Residents have complained that the county seems to fold whenever a company files or even threatens a lawsuit in response to an unfavorable action.

Last month, County Manager Jenifer Davidson told the Sierra Nevada Republican Woman that there are a lot of demands on the county’s funds.

That leaves the county having to pick its battles based on its checkbook, in addition to what residents want.
