For the first time, possibly in Douglas Pop Warner history, the Tiny Mite Cheerleaders are competing in the Nationals in Florida on Wednesday.
Head Coach Ashley Brown said the team started out with 22 girls, and the final 10 consist of girls ages 5-9 years old from Douglas County and Coleville.
“They have put in countless hours, hard work, and determination, and truly deserve to be recognized for their efforts,” said Brown, “as well as their coaches, myself, Emily Dumlao, Jesika Kosco, Alex Phillips, and the team manager Breanne Stillman who have been instrumental in guiding the team to this monumental achievement.”
Brown said the team placed first in the local competition at Mont Bleu in Lake Tahoe and earned second place at the Santa Clara Regionals, coming in less than a point from first place, qualifying them for the nationals competition.
“These are girls who have gone from not really knowing what they are doing to excelling,” said Assistant Coach Emily Dumlao.
On Wednesday, the Douglas Tiny Mites will perform a 2 minute and 30 second cheer routine complete with tumbling, motions, jumps, and stunts competing against East Coast competitors.
“Their resilience and commitment has been remarkable, and it’s a true honor to see them represent Douglas County on the national stage,” said Brown.
As they prepare for their trip to Florida, the coaches and team have been actively involved in the community to ensure they can make the journey and would appreciate the community’s continued support. Donations continue to be accepted and can be sent to Douglas Pop Warner, PO Box 307 Minden, NV 89423. Visit www.flocheer.com/signup to view the competition live.
