The Santa event horizon continues on Friday morning as the big guy is anticipated to arrive at the Carson Valley Inn as part of the annual Channel 2 Share Your Christmas Drive-by Food Drive.
The annual food drive, which benefits the Carson Valley Community Food Closet, is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Minden.
There are also drop-off locations in Reno, Carson City and Fernley.
Last year’s event raised $91,779.19 in cash and more than 10 tons of food, the second highest monetary donation in the quarter century the event has taken place.
“The Share your Christmas Food Drive is our lifeline for the year, playing a critical role in ensuring that families and individuals facing food insecurity have access to nutritious food well into the new year,” said Carson Valley Community Food Closet Co-director Cynthia A Rodriguez. “The Food Drive is essential to meeting increased demand, especially during the holidays and challenging economic times. It bridges a gap between limited resources and growing needs, ensuring no family has to go without food.”
Rodriquez said all donations and support given to the Food Closet directly and collected at our event at the CVI stays here benefiting our community.
The drive has resulted in donations of hundreds of tons of food and tens of thousands of dollars to the Food Closet since 1999.
Organizations across the Valley are collecting for donations.
Douglas Disposal will be picking up donations along with the trash this week. The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department also has a barrel out for donations.
Raley’s customers are a major donor to the cause after the Gardnerville store shifted to donating cash a few years back.
