The Carson High girls basketball team started Class 4A North league play on the right foot Tuesday with a 48-30 win over McQueen in Morse Burley Gymnasium.
The Senators scored just two points in the first quarter, but bounced back with a 16-2 run to take an 18-10 lead into the half.
“We are figuring out how to come out swinging,” said Carson head coach Sam Golden. “As we got more comfortable on defense, it sparked our ability to trust each other a little bit more, share the ball and play on attack.”
Senior captain Lauren Finnerty led the way with 13 points in the win while fellow senior captain Camryn Galloway had eight points.
Galloway demonstrated her ability to knock down mid-range jump shots in space Tuesday, impressing her head coach.
“I’m really proud of Cam. Her offseason work and how hard she has practiced that shot,” said Golden. “… We’re just trying to get her comfortable because we trust her to take that shot.”
Dahlia Keating hit three field goals in the second half to finish with six points. Natalia Armstrong, Ashlan Smokey and Clarissa Quintana all had four points apiece in the win.
UP NEXT: Carson (4-1, 1-0) has a week off before returning to action Dec. 19 on the road at Spanish Springs (5-1, 2-0).
DOUGLAS WRESTLING WINS OPENING DUALS
The Douglas High School wrestling team opened up its league slate a bit earlier than usual this season, but it didn’t stop the Tigers from defeating both opponents that came to town.
The Tigers defeated Reed, 51-30, in their first dual of the evening before besting Galena, 45-34, in the second matchup.
Senior captain Kolton Zinn was a perfect 2-0 at 150 pounds with two pins while junior Benjamin Goldstein also grabbed two wins by fall at 175 pounds.
Isaac Bedrosian had two wins via pin at 126 pounds while Cody Highfill picked up a win by pin against Reed.
Sophomore Maddex Kuckenmeister-Jones put together an impressive 12-9 win in sudden victory against Galena
The Douglas girls wrestling team tangled with a stout Reed team, falling 54-12 on the dual score.

LANCERS TURN BACK SENATOR BOYS
Carson High School boys basketball opened its Class 4A North league play against McQueen on Tuesday with a bit of a flat performance, falling 76-48.
The Senators had a tough night shooting from the floor, but still sat within range of making a comeback in the third quarter, trailing 43-32.
From that point, the Lancers’ 27-7 run was more than enough to run away to a 70-39 lead and seal the win.
Carson had a solid showing in its tournament prior to running into the Lancers, but a tough outing has posed some early questions for the Senators.
“That’s the big question to be answered. It was going really good after the tournament. … Pretty much everything we saw there, we didn’t see tonight. That falls on me,” said head coach Ty Golden. “I think a lot of it starts for us on the defensive glass. We have to rebound better.”
Landon Hoff led the way with 11 points for Carson while Jaren Thornburg added 10. Isaac Chambers and Japheth Banko both had seven points for the Senators.
UP NEXT: Carson (3-3, 0-1) took on Dayton (4-0) at home Thursday night, but will get a week off before traveling out to Spanish Springs (4-1, 2-0) on Dec. 19 for a league test.
