Attorneys stipulated Friday to delaying a first appearance in court for a Johnson Lane man accused in the shooting death of a woman.
Gregory Raymond Ward, 63, remains in custody in Renown Regional Medical Center facing open murder and murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the Dec. 16 shooting of Kathy Jean Weiland, 63, according to the Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley.
District Attorney Mark Jackson appeared in East Fork Justice Court to file the stipulation signed by Ward’s attorney, Theresa Ristenpart, to continue a hearing scheduled for Friday.
East Fork Justice of the Peace Steve McMorris signed the order.
Douglas County Jail records indicate Ward was booked Thursday afternoon from Renown.
No new date was set for his first hearing, which is likely waiting for him to heal sufficiently to participate in his defense.
Coverley said that once Ward is discharged from Renown, he will be moved to the jail in Minden.
No bail has been set in the case. Ward was transported to Renown shortly after deputies responded to a report at 1321 Dennis St.
They found Weiland was dead of a gunshot wound to the head and Ward was severely injured. Investigators believe it was a murder and attempted suicide, though they are continuing to work the case.
Ward was the owner of the home where the shooting occurred, having purchased it in 1998, according to the Douglas County Recorder. Weiland listed the address on a death certificate issued for her mother in 2021.
