A traffic stop just after midnight on Christmas Eve resulted in the arrest of two people with 4 ounces of what authorities believe to be a “date rape drug,” Sheriff Dan Coverley said on Tuesday.

Jacob Paul Hoffman, 46, of Carson City and Jamie Nikole Woods, 45, of Sparks are in Douglas County custody.

“Due to the suspicious behavior of the occupants of the vehicle, a Douglas Sheriff’s Office drug detection K9 was used to sniff the exterior of the vehicle,” Coverley said. “The K9 alerted to the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle.”

In addition to the gamma-hydroxybutyrate, 5.8 ounces of suspected methamphetamine was located in the vehicle during a search.

“GHB can be used as a recreational drug, but many times GHB is used as a “date rape drug,” Coverley said. “The would-be rapist will meet unsuspecting females at bars and secretly put a drop or two of the liquid GHB in the female’s drink (usually from an eye-drop container of some similar plastic container). Shortly after unknowingly ingesting the drug, the female loses consciousness whereupon the suspect assaults her.  Many times, the female will wake up with short term amnesia and remember very little about the events leading up to her assault.”

Coverley reminded women out celebrating the holidays to keep an eye on their drinks.

Hoffman and Woods were booked into the Minden Jail for trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a lock pick set.
