Genoa, Nev. — I have exactly zero feel for how New Year’s Eve will go tonight. On the one hand, it’s the middle of the week. But on the other, the weather is expected to be relatively nice, with the temperature at midnight in Stateline forecast to be 30 degrees at midnight.

My first and last personal experience with New Year’s Eve in Stateline was as a reporter embedded with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 31, 1990. I’d spent New Year’s Eve 1988 on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, and I still remember being fairly impressed.

If you’re looking for a little reflection time, the annual Candlelight Labyrinth Walk is 6-9 p.m. today at Heritage Park Gardens in Gardnerville. Taking a quiet walk is never a bad idea, whether at the labyrinth or elsewhere.

While a Costco organic egg recall is focused on the South, I expect having a quarter-million eggs recalled due to salmonella isn’t helping matters with supply across the nation. Check the FDA web site to learn more.

At Sunday’s Christmas Bird Count, organizer and ecological behavioralist Ben Sonnenberg pointed out that most waterfowl likely had some strain of bird flu at some point. Just as with people, the flu affects individual birds differently depending on their immunity and resources.

The R-C is closing early today, though if you need something, drop me a line and it will track me down wherever I might be. Everything will be closed on Wednesday.

This last day of 2024 is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high temperature of 45 degrees with a light breeze in the afternoon.
