Genoa, Nev. — Road controls are in effect on all the mountain roads around Lake Tahoe, including Kingsbury Grade. Highways 88, 50 and Interstate 80 all have chain or snow tire requirements, as does Highway 395 through the Walker River Canyon.
The traffic cameras on Kingsbury and Cave Rock are indicating some snow and ice on the roads. A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Sierra around Lake Tahoe through 1 a.m. Thursday.
The brunt of last night’s storm was mainly the west slope of the Sierra where snow telemetry at Echo Peak near Twin Bridges recorded 10 inches of snow. Ward Creek above the west shore of Tahoe recorded 11 inches. Heavenly got maybe 3 inches, according to its Snowtel site.
Carson Valley appeared to be shut out again with just a trace down near Fredericksburg over the past 24 hours. It was dry as a bone at my place north of Genoa at 6 a.m. and the sky’s actually fairly clear.
Genoans are scheduled to talk about hiring a new town manager at their meeting 5:30 p.m. today. The town board will also hear a presentation from the Friends of Snowshoe Thompson for a March 6-10 expedition from Placerville to Nevada’s oldest settlement.
There is a race developing for Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace after appointed judge Mike Johnson filed for the seat. I’m told Rick Gardner, who also sought appointment to the seat vacated by Richard Glasson, is in the process of filing. Former Douglas County prosecutor Laurie Trotter filed for East Fork Justice of the Peace on Tuesday.
Now to the somewhat thankless task of reporting the weather. There’s a 30 percent chance we’ll see snow flurries after 10 a.m. under partly sunny skies. The wind will shift from southeast at 5-10 mph to northwest as the next front rolls in. None of these storms carries much in the way of precipitation for Carson Valley, and I’m taking the forecast with a grain of salt, just to help with traction.
