Carson High heavyweight Dominic Porter earned a place on the podium in late December at the Sierra Nevada Classic.
In total, Porter won eight matches – all via pin – to take third place in his weight class.
He won in the first and second rounds before suffering his one loss in the two-day tournament.
After losing in the third round by an 8-2 decision, Porter put together six straight wins.
None of his matches went longer than 4:40 as he cruised through his competition to take third place.
Teammates Isiah Oliva (190 pounds) and JT Heaton (175) both went 3-2 in their brackets.
AJ Marhevka won his first two matches before finishing the tournament with a 3-2 record as well.
Adie takes eighth at SNC
Douglas High senior Sage Adie finished in eighth place in the 215-pound weight bracket at the Sierra Nevada Classic.
Adie won his first three matches with a pin and two wins by decision before falling in the quarterfinals.
The senior picked up an 8-2 decision win in the consolation, but dropped his final two matches by fall.
At 190 pounds Aaron Tekansik went 5-2, losing in his last match by a 6-1 decision.
Kolton Zinn went 3-2 at 150 pounds and Cody Highfill went 3-2 at 120.
Carson boys basketball 2-2 over break
The Carson High basketball team split its four contests over the winter break.
The Senators picked up wins over North Valleys (52-39) and Mineral County (63-52) before losing to LaSalle (67-31) and Shasta (59-50).
In the win over North Valleys, Mouhamed Fall scored 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.
Justin Moore added 11 points.
Against Mineral County, Fall recorded another double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
Dylan O’Dell added 13 points and five rebounds in the win.
UP NEXT: Carson (4-9, 0-4 in Class 4A North league play) will turn its sights to league play, hosting Galena (9-4, 1-3) today.
Douglas boys hoops drop three of four
The Tiger boys basketball team fell in three of four games over the holiday break, picking up a win over Bellarmine Prep, 52-47.
In the win, Jeremiah Pitts posted 20 points while Kyle Koontz added 12.
Douglas lost to St. Anthony (90-52), Berkeley (80-40) and Northgate (61-43).
UP NEXT: The Tigers (3-11, 2-2 in Class 4A North league play) will host Spanish Springs (5-8, 2-2) today in Minden.
Carson girls basketball posts .500 mark over break
Carson High girls basketball went 2-2 over the winter break.
The Senators recorded wins over Coral Academy of Las Vegas (57-44) and Boulder City (49-33), but lost to Sierra Vista (59-46) and Fallon (55-33).
In the win over Coral Academy, Lauren Finnerty exploded for 29 points while also pulling down 11 rebounds and grabbing five steals.
Finnerty posted 19 points in the win over Boulder City while Alondra Carillo added 11.
It was another double-double for Finnerty who had 15 rebounds as well as three assists and three steals.
UP NEXT: Carson (5-8, 0-4) hosts Galena (2-12, 1-3) today.
Douglas girls basketball splits four games over break
The Tiger girls basketball team went 2-2 over the holiday break.
Douglas earned wins over Rocklin (48-40) and Imperial (44-43) while losing to West Jordan (46-42) and Heritage (66-62).
Statistics were unavailable for any of the games.
