For the second day in a row, Gov. Joe Lombardo ordered nonessential state offices closed on Friday.

Douglas County schools are on a 90-minute delay with Tahoe schools using main bus stops only.

Chains or snow tires are being required on Highway 395 north of Stephanie Way. The Nevada State Police are working a handful of collisions on Interstate 80 as slick roads pose a challenge for motorists.

Update

The first snow day of 2024 was declared for Douglas County school children and state workers for today.

Opening of some Douglas County offices may be delayed due to slick road conditions.

Severe weather conditions also prompted Gov. Joe Lombardo to order all state executive branch offices in Western Nevada not essential for public safety closed for the day.

The order affects state offices in Carson City, Douglas, Churchill, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey and Washoe counties.

Lombardo ordered offices closed after reports from the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety reports of dangerous road conditions, according to his office.

“The Governor’s office will continue to monitor weather conditions. Governor Lombardo urges northern Nevadans to take caution on roadways and to follow all NDOT and DPS guidance,” according to the state.

Chain requirements are in effect for most Western Nevada highways extending from Lake Tahoe out to Fallon and Lovelock, where a snow squall warning was issued on Wednesday evening for heavy snow.

Traffic cameras in Carson Valley show Highway 395 with snow on it at Airport Road and south of town. Vehicles appear to be traveling normally.

Snow telemetry at Heavenly Valley recorded 1.5 inches of precipitation in the form of 10 inches of snow since 5 a.m. Wednesday, bringing the snow depth up to 28 inches as of 3 a.m. today.

A location a mile north of Genoa recorded 4 inches of snow, reflecting totals in the Valley.
