First American Title organized a fundraiser in December for the children living in the Family Support Council’s Domestic Violence Shelter.
“We love serving our community any way needed,” said First American Marketing Manager Cynthia Failor. “When we heard of the need at our local shelter; we had to jump in and do something for the kids.”
Local real estate agents, mortgage companies and others rallied to bring some cheer for those kids seeking refuge at the undisclosed shelter.
More than 20 backpacks for kids ranging from 2-17 years old were stuffed with games, winter gloves, hats and snacks.
Family Support Council Executive Director Veronica LaChance said that 60 percent of children are exposed to some sort of domestic violence in their lifetime and that children entering shelters often feel scared and vulnerable.
“Backpacks filled with special and individualized items help children feel comfortable, safe, and valued,” LaChance said. “It also relieves the expectation of the mother to have to fill this gap.” Mothers entering the shelter are often in fight or flight mode and leave their old homes without the belongings to which they’ve grown accustomed.
Last year First American Title organized a purse fundraiser for the women in the shelter.
