Genoa, Nev. — Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect for the Carson and Bridgeport ranger districts starting today, for pretty obvious reasons. Minden hasn’t seen a drop of rain since May 14. Last month was one of 20 Junes since 1906 not to see any rain in the county seat. Eight of those have been in the first quarter of the 21st Century.

The nine-day July Fourth weekend opened with a couple of vehicle incidents on Friday night. A bear was killed when it was hit by a vehicle on Highway 395 near Stephanie Way around 9:50 p.m. Friday.

A pickup truck rolled into a pond around 6 p.m. Friday at Foothill Road and Lakeside Drive. The driver swam to safety, but the pickup was still there on Saturday morning.

Douglas online merchants are making it rain, though, with $16.6 million in taxable sales in April, according to the Nevada Department of Taxation figures released on Friday. That’s twice April 2023. The county is running 6.5 percent ahead of last year.

I hit a swarm of grasshoppers driving down Genoa Lane just before Highway 395 on Saturday morning. They are back again this year, though perhaps not quite so pernicious.

Speaking of Highway 395, all four lanes are open this week through 7 p.m. Sunday, when work resumes. Enjoy it while it lasts.

After a somewhat mild weekend, the temperatures are forecast to climb back into the 90s today and keep on climbing. The first 100-degree temperatures are forecast to arrive Saturday.

Today the forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees with the wind out of the northwest at 5 mph.
