Genoa, Nev. — There was a report of traffic congestion up at Zephyr Cove Resort around 5:45 a.m. today. It cleared up pretty quick, but there will be traffic and crowds at the Lake today as people set up for a day at the beach and an evening watching fireworks.

Deputies were already calling for tow trucks for errant parkers on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove before 7 a.m. If you are heading to the Lake for the Fourth today, make sure you park where you're supposed to, because it's going to be a long walk home and expensive to bail out your vehicle if it's towed away.

There were 240 people signed up for the Gardnerville Freedom 5K on Wednesday morning, with the potential number of runners approaching 300 this morning. In-person registration opens at 6:55 a.m. today. Visit Freedom 5K for more information.

Fourth of July events for later risers include Minden’s barbecue in the park at 10 a.m. and the Genoa Kids & Pets Parade at 10:30 a.m. The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department will start serving $14 barbecue chicken dinners around 11 a.m.

There are a lot of musical performances through the day, with the Carson Valley Pops in Heritage Park and the Front Porch Band at Mormon Station starting around 11:30 a.m. The Carson City Symphony begins at 3:45 p.m. in Mormon Station to cap off the Valley celebrations.

Lights on the Lake is touted as one of the best Fourth of July fireworks shows in the West and maybe worth the struggle. Carson City moved the RSVP fireworks from Mills Park to Eagle Valley Golf Course. Virginia City also hosts a fireworks show, as does Reno. Fireworks start when it’s dark enough to see them.

We’ve said it many times and many ways, but personal fireworks are illegal to sell, possess and especially set off in the Sierra Front, both on public lands and private property.

I may be grasping at straws here, but the peak high temperature in the forecast for Sunday has dropped to 102 degrees, which would tie the record set in 2007’s big four-day heat wave.

It topped out at 95 degrees on Wednesday at a couple of locations in Carson Valley, which was a degree short of the forecast. Today’s forecast is for sunny skies and a high near 97 degrees, picking up out of the west at 5-10 mph this afternoon.
