Genoa, Nev. — Alpine, Mono and southern Lyon counties are under a fire weather watch noon to 10 p.m. today for the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds. The excessive heat warning is still expires 9 a.m. Saturday.
A hay fire on Bently Ranch property between East Valley and Minden-Tahoe Airport was reported around 2 p.m. just as I was finishing up the story on fire dangers. The ranch folks got the fire out before firefighters arrived.
When I heard the call, I went to nevadafireinfo.org and found the fire on the Alert Wildfire cameras. That site may be getting a lot of traction over the next few days if the thunderstorms turn up.

In addition to Celebrity Golf at Lake Tahoe, the Death Ride will be rolling through Alpine County on Saturday. Ebbetts and Monitor passes are closed at 5 a.m. with Monitor back at noon and Ebbetts closed until 4 p.m. The race starts and ends at Turtle Rock Park.
Alpine County Historical Society’s dedication of the Archives Building to Nancy Thornburg is 10 a.m. Sunday at 270 Laramie St., Markleeville. Events start at 9:30 a.m.

It seems there is a very warm microclimate right at the foot of the Carson Range. On Thursday I received independent reports from residents that it hit 106 degrees in Sheridan and Fredericksburg. The Gardnerville Ranchos got up to 104 degrees, while it hit 103 degrees just below Sunridge.
It's a pretty good bet Thursday was officially the sixth day in a row with temperatures of 100 or above in Minden. Today might not quite make it a solid week, with some disagreement in the forecast on whether it will crack triple digits.
Smoke from the California fires might actually reduce the chance of thunderstorms. There’s a 20 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. and widespread haze through the day. The odds of showers goes up markedly on Saturday.
