A Wings & Wheels event will celebrate National Aviation Week with an open house at Minden-Tahoe Airport 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 24.

“Airport Discovery Day will feature a variety of activities and experiences for attendees to enjoy,” according to Douglas County. “The day will kick off with a delicious pancake breakfast, perfect for fueling up before exploring the airport's facilities and learning about aviation. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet pilots and learn about their experiences in the sky.”

There will be a dedicated kids’ corner, where children can participate in aviation-themed activities and games in addition to a colorful hot air balloon display.

Legacy Airbase will be providing experience for five veterans with two riding in a T6 aircraft, and three others riding a Stearman biplane. One of the veterans just turned 100 years old and has dreamed of flying again since he was a pilot in the war.

"We are thrilled to host this open house event at Minden-Tahoe Airport," said Airport Manager Heather MacDonnell. "It's a great opportunity for our community to come together and learn about aviation while enjoying a day filled with fun activities. We are honored to partner with Legacy Airbase and take this opportunity to celebrate a few of our nations heroes.”

There will also be static displays showcasing various aircraft on the ground, including Reno National Air Guard’s C-130 and a car show by the Douglas Dukes. The Douglas Dukes are a loose-knit group of "car guys" from Douglas County. The Dukes will support the Minden-Tahoe Airport's Open House with a few of its members' cars.
