Man admits felony child abuse

A Topaz Ranch Estates man admitted to abuse of a child Tuesday and could be facing up to six years in prison.

Timothy Shayne Kaecker was arrested Jan. 19, 2023, for strangulation and abuse of a child. Kaecker was scheduled to go to trial on the charges in June.

According to court documents, Kaecker tried to strangle the mother of his children after a tug-war- over their 4-month-old causing the car seat containing the infant to fall. Kaecker also prevented the woman or any of the  four children in the home to call for help, by taking her phone.

Kaecker currently has a no contact order and wears a GPS monitor.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 17.

• After a warrant was issued for a man who failed to appear in Douglas County District court, he had to be extradited from the prison.

Richard Dennis Gomes, 44, was arrested April 1, 2022, after cashing a forged check at Bally’s Lake Tahoe in March 2022.

Gomes admitted to the charges and since he was already serving time, a presentence investigation was not ordered, and the arraignment proceeded to sentencing.

He was given 12-30 months to run simultaneously with the sentence he is already serving. 

• A man admitted Tuesday to stealing his ex-girlfriend’s Kia Sorrento and running up $416 in charges on her credit card.

Sergio Borquez Chacon, 52, entered guilty pleas to grand larceny of a motor vehicle and fraudulent use of a credit card, in connection with an April 9, 2022, theft.

While both sides will recommend simultaneous sentences of 12-32 months, he could face up to nine years and a $15,000 fine when he returns for sentencing on Sept. 10.

• Two men admitted supplying methamphetamine in separate Douglas County District Court cases.

Jared Joseph Hall admitted to selling an ounce of methamphetamine on Feb. 23.

Joseph William Reid admitted he sold methamphetamine on Dec. 15, 2023.

Both men face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Attorneys are free to argue for any lawful sentence when they return to court on Sept. 10.

• A man who sold methamphetamine to an undercover Douglas County Sheriff deputy faces 20 years in prison.

James Steven Molina, 53, was part of an April 2 drug sting.

Molina was in possession of approximately 58 grams of methamphetamine.

Sentencing is set for September 9.

• A man who overdosed on fentanyl and had to be injected with Narcan is getting a chance to address his addiction.

Justin David Dick, 23, was arrested on Sept. 28, 2023, for possession of fentanyl.

According to court documents he was driving while under the influence with a minor in the vehicle who was also intoxicated.

He was released to Western Nevada Drug Court preceding sentencing.

Dick also has a warrant in another jurisdiction and may be facing additional charges.

• A man who attempted to change the price of an item by placing it in a smaller box admitted to burglary of a business on Monday.

Michael Evan Reid, 35, was arrested Feb. 19 when he attempted to steal tablets from Best Buy, then went into the Walmart on Topsy Lane and attempted to reduce the value of an item by placing it in a lower priced box.

He faces up to five years in prison.  Sentencing is set for Sept. 9.

A Reno man was sentenced to prison after being one of the few people in Douglas County to be convicted by a jury of felony failure to appear.

Jacob Angelo Massey, 38, received 12-30 months and is currently serving his term at Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

Massey was arrested Nov. 2, 2022, for slapping a woman and pushing her into a bookcase while she was talking to dispatchers.

Massey’s Oct. 16, 2023, trial resulted in a mistrial, and he was released from custody with a Nov. 6 hearing date. He failed to appear and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He was taken into custody on Jan. 30 in Reno and was brought back to Douglas County.

According to prosecutors, Massey violated a no-contact order with the woman and was sentenced in East Fork Justice Court to 12 days in jail.

Massey has a history of violent conduct, failure to show up to court, and substance abuse.

One of his previous felony domestic violence convictions was the topic of regional media coverage after a January 2020 trial. In that case he was sentenced to 2-6 years in prison and was paroled Jan. 3, 2022.

On July 16, Massey asked for probation.

“I just want a chance to complete probation, I can do it,” he said at his sentencing.

Douglas County District Court Tod Young said he had several chances to address the case, including the warrant against him and any other issues.
