Kids & Horses (kidsandhorses.org) has partnered with “Stable Moments” to offer an equine-assisted mentorship program that serves youth currently in foster care and those who have been adopted (stablemoments.com).

Youth participants are matched with a 1:1 mentor for the duration of the 10-month program. Research indicates that just one healthy, long-lasting relationship with an adult can have a significant and positive impact on a child’s life and “builds resiliency factors in children with complex trauma needs.”

Plans of care are individualized for each participant and address life skills including emotional awareness, healthy relationships, independence, responsibility, self-regulation, and self-worth. Volunteer mentors and program participants work together to map out each weekly session to incorporate connection, transition, and specific life-skills activities. Progress summaries are completed after each session.

The program is scheduled to begin Sept. 7 at the Kids & Horses therapeutic riding center, 2869 Esaw St. in Minden. For more information, contact Program Director Catherine O’Brien at catskidsandhorses@gmail.com or call her at 775-720-8614.
